Meet Carlos
I was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles.
It wasn't until I started taking daily walks with my new puppy in 2025 that I began to notice just how much illegal dumping had become part of my neighborhood.
The puppy would get in the trash, try to eat junk, and grooming became an issue. So to save me the headache of grooming him, I just ended up picking up the trash.
At first, I started carrying a trash bag on my morning walks.
Then I began cleaning entire blocks.
Neighbors started noticing.
Volunteers began showing up.
Before long, South Central Cleanup was born.
Today, South Central Cleanup brings together volunteers from across Los Angeles who share a simple belief: if we want cleaner, safer neighborhoods, we all have a role to play.
Pilot 01: South Central LA
Many illegal dumping sites are cleaned only to be dumped on again days later.
Pilot 01 follows selected locations over time to better understand recurrence patterns and identify what helps keep neighborhoods clean.
